Originally from Lenoir, North Carolina, Joseph Reid was raised in a musically rich environment by parents who were both dedicated public school music educators. This upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for music from an early age and laid a strong foundation for his development as a performer and educator.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Georgia, where he studied under Mr. Philip Smith and Dr. Brandon Craswell. While at UGA, he performed with the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, British Brass Band, and the Classic City Brass Quintet. He was awarded the Fred Mills Memorial Scholarship and was an active member of the local music scene in Athens, performing regularly with a variety of bands and ensembles downtown.
Joseph went on to receive his Master’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Maryland, studying with Mr. Chris Gekker and a member of the Terrapin Brass Quintet. While at UMD, he played with both the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Orchestra, performing principal trumpet parts in major works such as Stravinsky’s Petrushka, William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1, and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.
A dedicated educator, he has taught private trumpet lessons since 2017 and served as Assistant Marching Band Director at North Oconee High School and Elbert County High School in the Athens, Georgia area. He was also an instructor for the inaugural Fortissimo! Chamber Music Festival, presented by the Wilmington Symphony, during its most recent season. As an arranger, his commissions include works for trumpet ensemble, trumpet and string quartet, and the Terrapin Brass Quintet.
His principal teachers include Mr. Philip Smith, Mr. Chris Gekker, Dr. Brandon Craswell, and Dr. James Stokes.
Outside of music, he enjoys traveling, grilling, and spending time with friends, family, and his dog, Coco.
